Why Is My Tub Faucet Leaking?
A dripping bathtub faucet is usually caused by worn-out washers, a damaged cartridge, corroded valve seats, or loose internal parts. Identifying the type of faucet you have is the first step toward a lasting repair.
Tools and Materials You'll Need
- Adjustable wrench and a set of screwdrivers
- Allen (hex) keys
- Replacement washers, O-rings, or a cartridge kit
- Plumber's grease and plumber's tape
- A clean rag and a small container for parts
Step 1: Shut Off the Water Supply
Turn off the water at the shutoff valves or the main supply. Open the faucet to release any remaining pressure, and place a rag over the drain so you don't lose small parts.
Step 2: Remove the Faucet Handle
Pry off the decorative cap, remove the handle screw, and gently pull the handle free. Take a photo before disassembly so you can reassemble everything in the correct order.
Step 3: Inspect and Replace Worn Parts
Remove the stem or cartridge and examine the washers, O-rings, and valve seat. Replace any cracked, flattened, or corroded components with exact-match replacements from your local hardware store.
Step 4: Reassemble and Test
Apply plumber's grease to the new parts, reinstall the cartridge or stem, and reattach the handle. Turn the water back on slowly and check for leaks. If the drip is gone, your repair is complete.
When to Call a Professional
If the leak persists after replacing the internal parts, or if you notice corrosion deep in the valve body, it may be time to contact a licensed plumber to avoid water damage.
